Making of a cute stuffed bunny…

Bunny!

I wanted to make my boyfriend something for his birthday as a surprise so I searched around the web. I had a rough idea that I wanted to make a stuffed animal of some kind. At first I thought bear… but then realized after a bit that a better idea would be a bunny as he likes them. He also used to have a pet bunny who has sadly passed away. I played around with a couple of patterns but it didn’t come out satisfactory. I ended up following this pattern here. The site is in Chinese but the PDF file is available there and Google Translate will help with the rest. :)

Things to note is that I modified the pattern as I wanted my bunny to have floppy ears, two-toned & bigger limbs, and a different face. I got my materials from FabricLand. I just wanted something soft and snuggle worthy.

The instructions on the website are pretty easy to follow. I just had to think a bit about which way the colors had to face when sewing them in place. (The ears are inside.)

Flip it inside out!

I sewed the back pieces of the body together and then cut a small slit for the tail, just barely enough for it to go through. I then sewed it in place after I stuffed it.

So I kind of made a boo boo when I thought to make the limbs this round so I actually had to trim it down a bit afterwards. The larger limbs made it a bit hard to work with, especially if they are stuffed beforehand as everything is stuffed inside the body until it’s turned right-side out.

Ooops, fat limbs!

I didn’t attach my eyes till the end which made it more difficult. If I had thought about it, it would have been easier to attach the eyes before putting the head together. I didn’t stuff the ears so they would flop. If you wanted them to stand I guess you could put the soft craft piping sewn along the ear edges so that the ears can stand and bend.

Completed head

Attached the head to the body and my cutie floppy bunny is complete! I think I’ll make another one with swirly (dazed) eyes to pair with the other.

R.I.P Uncle

My mom called today to tell me that my uncle, who had cancer, has passed away. It makes me think back to when I was little and the times spent over there with my cousins. It’s sad and I feel for their family.

It’s a lot easier for me to convey what I feel in the written form than it is for me to say something out loud. Maybe that’s a remnant of growing up in a household where feelings weren’t discussed or it may just be part of my personality.

I thought, “I don’t actually know how to comfort my mom.” This is mostly due to my being unable to have a conversation with her. Lots of things happened but it boils down to the way she blames others (and when talking to me, it’s me she’s blaming) for things that happen in her life. Worst memory is her blaming my brother and I for the problems between her and my dad, when I was in grade 6 or 7. I’m glad my brother wasn’t there to hear that. Not that we were bad kids, we didn’t go out, got good grades but somehow it was our fault. Anyhow, she left, came back, left, and we still got along alright until she blamed me for something. I was older, and somehow, I had less patience for being blamed for things that were actually her fault rather than mine. Ever since then, it’s been a real effort to even get along civilly or without me getting angry.

Still, the point is that I don’t know how to comfort her…
